Resource conservation and climate protection

In the work we perform with and for our customers, we help to recover valuable raw materials, conserve natural resources and protect the climate.

The prestigious Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT regularly publishes studies confirming the positive ecological effects of our engagements.

Scientifically proven climate protection

In its annual study “resources SAVED by recycling”, the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT calculates the extent to which the environment has been helped by ALBA Group’s recycling services. In 2020 alone, this study showed that 4.8 million tonnes of resources were handled by closed-loop systems run by ALBA Group companies such as Interzero in Germany, Austria, Poland and Slovenia, saving around 28.8 million tonnes of primary raw materials. The companies also saved more than 3.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Material flows included in Fraunhofer’s recycling study included metals, waste electrical equipment, paper/paperboard/cardboard, glass, lightweight packaging, plastics and wood.

Reducing transportation, reusing IT devices

In another study from the “resources SAVED” series, Fraunhofer UMSICHT looked at the positive impact on resources and the climate from the refurbishing and reuse of IT and communications devices, as organised by Interzero. As one example, using refurbishment to extend the service life of just one laptop saves around 181 kg of primary raw materials and 154 kg of greenhouse gas emissions.

Interzero’s Mobile Counting Centre (MCC) also helps save resources. The local availability of the mobile counting service for non-refillable bottles means companies avoid long trips to stationary counting centres. “resources SAVED” shows that the MCC’s annual CO2 savings equal the amount removed by around three wooded football pitches.

"Recycling is an important building block for a sustainable society: it contributes to resource conservation and greenhouse gas savings and reduces economic dependence on imported raw materials. The study "resources SAVED by recycling" impressively shows what a major role companies like the ALBA Group have in this process."
