In its annual study “resources SAVED by recycling”, the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT calculates the extent to which the environment has been helped by Interzero’s recycling services.  

In 2025 alone, this study showed that more than 2 million tonnes of resources were handled by closed-loop systems run by Interzero’s companies such as Interzero in Germany, Austria, Poland; Italy and Slovenia, saving more than 7.2 million tonnes of primary raw materials. This is equivalent to the average load carried by 13,439 freight trains.* At the same time, Interzero's recycling activities avoided a total of more than 900,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases. This equates to around EUR 900 million in avoided climate damage costs when the interests of present and future generations are weighted equally.**

In another study from the “resources SAVED” series, Fraunhofer UMSICHT looked at the positive impact on resources and the climate from the refurbishing and reuse of IT and communications devices, as organised by Interzero. Depending on the type of device, reusing or refurbishing equipment can save between 18 and 37 percent of GHG emissions, with smartphones having a particularly high savings potential as giving these a second life can save 34.7 kg in GHG emissions. Compared to a single conventional life cycle, reusing a smartphone reduces GHG emissions by around 37 percent. Tablets given a second life save around 34 percent or 59.4 kg in GHG emissions. Compared to a conventional life cycle, refurbished laptops save around 31 or 107 kg and desktop PCs around 18 percent or 163 kg in GHG emissions.
