Plastics Recycling Awards Europe 2020: Interseroh and HOUE among the finalists

Interseroh is once again among the finalists at this year's international Plastics Recycling Awards Europe 2020. Together with Danish design house HOUE, the environmental services provider is competing for the coveted award in the "Household and Leisure Product of the Year" category with the sustainable design chair "FALK Chair".

What makes the FALK Chair so special is that the shell, including the seat and back and armrests, is made from 100 per cent Procyclen, a recompound produced by Interseroh from used plastic packaging from the Dual System. Around 30 per cent of the metal legs are also made from recycled materials. "The FALK Chair shows how innovation and visionary partnerships can drive plastic recycling forward so that it has an ever greater impact on our everyday lives," says Dr Manica Ulcnik-Krump, Head of the Recycled-Resource Business Unit at Interseroh.

"Thanks to advanced technology, it is now possible to manufacture products with high design and functional value from plastic waste while maintaining the same level of quality. The newly developed Procyclen is a material that consists largely of lightweight packaging waste as well as modifiers and inorganic fillers including glass fibres. This enables us to guarantee high rigidity. Anti-scratch stabilisers also ensure a good surface quality of the end product. Dyes, including UV stabilisers, are used to achieve long-term colour stability."

Interseroh has been developing high-quality plastic recyclates for different market requirements for many years and uses them successfully in various products. These recyclates replace virgin materials in many areas and thus make a valuable contribution to the sustainable use of resources. Last year, Interseroh, together with technology manufacturer EREMA, received one of the Plastics Recycling Awards Europe in the "Recycling Machinery Innovation of the Year" category for the COREMA® cascade extrusion system. COREMA® makes it possible for the first time to produce customised recycling compounds for high-quality applications in just one process step. The innovative technology was developed in its combination specifically for the requirements of Interseroh. COREMA® was also used in the production of the FALK Chair.

"This is the first time we have used post-consumer recyclates for a high-quality design product in the furniture sector and we are delighted to have been selected as one of the finalists by the jury for this achievement," adds Ulcnik-Krump. "This is a great recognition of our commitment over the last few years." In addition to Interseroh and HOUE, SPARK Design Studio by Thomas Pedersen and MV Plastics Ltd were also involved in the development of the FALK Chair.
