The beginning. Interseroh’s original aim is to strengthen the recycling of packaging waste. Since then, the company has steadily expanded its portfolio as an international environmental services provider, setting the benchmark in waste prevention, high-tech sorting and innovative recycling solutions. 

Interseroh expands its business model and enters the metals and steel recycling market, which develops into the company’s second main pillar and is systematically built up in the years that follow.

With the establishment of system operator INTERSEROH Austria GmbH, Interseroh launches its international business activities. The years that follow are marked by continuous expansion into further European markets. 

With Repasack, Interseroh introduces a unique Europe-wide take-back and recycling system for paper sacks. The company also demonstrates its commitment to environmental education by launching the award-winning “Recycling Dragon” project for collecting empty toner cartridges in schools and nurseries. 

Interseroh establishes a take-back system for single-use deposit containers and today operates ten stationary counting centres across Germany, as well as two mobile counting centres (MCCs). 

As the first competitor, Interseroh receives nationwide approval in Germany as a dual system operator. The resulting competition significantly increases recycling rates for packaging waste. 

The year of reusable pooling. Interseroh launches an innovative pooling solution for transport packaging. 

Interseroh becomes part of the recycling specialist and raw materials provider ALBA Group, expanding its portfolio to include the group’s combined expertise. 

Closing the loop for plastics. Interseroh develops the multi-award-winning recycling process Recycled-Resource. 

With a paint bucket from the toom DIY brand, a product made from the recycled plastic Procyclen developed by Interseroh is launched on the market for the first time. The material used for the bucket is produced from almost 100 per cent post-consumer plastic collected via dual systems (yellow bin/yellow bag).

Interseroh publishes its first sustainability report, providing a comprehensive and systematic account of how both internal processes and customer projects are designed to be environmentally and socially responsible. The report presents key developments and figures for the years 2010 to 2012 and complies with the internationally recognised Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines. 

Interseroh further develops its sustainability reporting and launches an annual sustainability magazine. This journalistic publication showcases best practices in sustainability – both within the company and in collaboration with customers. 

Interseroh celebrates 25 years of success and opens a new competence centre for plastics recycling in Maribor, Slovenia. In addition, Encory – a 50:50 joint venture between ALBA Group and BMW Group for sustainable vehicle parts management – is launched. 

The online shop brandused.com goes live, offering refurbished IT equipment as well as unused technology products from corporate sales and warehouse clearances to end customers, thereby extending product lifecycles. Today, the shop operates under the name gebrauchte-technik.de. 

Since 2018, companies have been able to assess and optimise the recyclability of their packaging based on the scientifically grounded “Made for Recycling” methodology. In the same year, Interseroh and Saubermacher AG establish the joint venture SIMPLi RETURN GmbH – the first take-back and recycling system for lithium-ion batteries. 

With the online licensing platform Lizenzero, the Interseroh dual system (DSI) offers tailored solutions for packaging producers of all sizes. Internationally, Interseroh continues to expand its range of services and is now present in Austria, Slovenia, Poland, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Italy. 

The new dual system Interseroh+ is launched, featuring an innovative concept that goes far beyond packaging licensing. Its aim is to close material loops through a “recycling alliance” with industry and retail. 

Setting the course for the future and the creation of Interzero. Dr Axel Schweitzer assumes responsibility, among other things, for the Asia business and plastics recycling activities. With the introduction of the Interzero brand, he underscores the company’s global vision of a “world without waste”.

Double Accolade at the German Sustainability Award 2024. Interzero, Europe’s leading circular solutions provider, receives two awards: the German Sustainability Award 2024 in the waste management and recycling category, as well as the special prize in the “Resources” transformation field.
