For more packaging recycling: Interseroh+ welcomes the new minimum standard of the ZSVR

Köln.  When is packaging fit for the circular economy? What does the new minimum standard for measuring recyclability, which was published at the beginning of September by the Stiftung Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister (ZSVR), mean? – Questions that are currently occupying many brand and packaging manufacturers and are also discussed vividly in the online seminars of Interseroh+.

The recycling and system service provider Interseroh+ welcomes the new minimum standard, which, according to the will of the legislator, creates an orientation framework for the dual systems and their customers. "With our packaging analysis 'Made for Recycling', we support the development towards a climate- and resource-saving circular economy," says Markus Müller-Drexel, CEO of Interseroh+ GmbH.  "The scientific evaluation methodology developed together with the bifa Environmental Institute is based on the minimum standard and supports companies from industry and trade in a very concrete way in complying with the legal requirements."

As a member of the "EKIII" expert group, Interseroh+ is actively involved in the annual updates of the minimum standard. One of the most important innovations this year is the obligation to provide individual proof for most fibre-based packaging.

"Numerous factors such as film coatings, functional bondingor adhesive dots can impair the recyclability of paper packaging," explains Julian Thielen, Head of "Made for Recycling Interseroh+" and Packaging Engineer. "The new obligation to provide evidence is therefore a good and sensible measure – even if we would like to see stronger requirements, especially for composite packaging." In cooperation with external paper laboratories, Interseroh+ offers the recyclability analysis of paper packaging according to methods n PTS-RH 021/2012 and Aticelca UNI 11743:2019.

Another change to the minimum standard concerns the recyclability of plastic packaging. In the future, co-extruded polyamide (PA) will be permitted in PE films under very narrow boundary conditions. Here, too, Interseroh+ can provide valuable support with its packaging analysis. In the company's own competence center Interzero Plastics Innovations, the experts use state-of-the-art technology to analyze both the materials and the design of the packaging as well as the practical sorting and recycling capability. By investing in the new Bruker FTIR microscope Lumos II unit, the laboratory is also able to analyze multi-layered, co-extruded films and recognize the individual layers. As early as 2020, the laboratory in Maribor, Slovenia, received international accreditation (ISO/IEC 17025:2017) – the only recognized research institution in the EU specializing in the development and analysis of recycled plastics.

The Interseroh+ team is also happy to discuss these topics with visitors at this year's Fachpack trade fair in Nuremberg from 27 to 29 September 2022.
