"Future Resources": Where the Packaging Industry Shapes the Future

On 17 June 2026, "Future Resources" will once again bring together leading experts from industry, retail, politics, associations and academia in Cologne to discuss the key challenges of the circular economy and the future of packaging in an open, practical and solution-oriented manner.

Regulatory pressure, scarce resources, and rising expectations from policymakers, commerce and society mean that the packaging industry is undergoing profound change. Yet transformation does not mean stagnation. On the contrary, it creates new opportunities for innovation, collaboration and sustainable business models. This is precisely where “Future Resources” comes in.

Guidance in Times of Change

With the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), Germany’s Packaging Act (VerpackDG) and further European directives, the framework for packaging is being fundamentally reshaped. Companies face the challenge of meeting regulatory requirements while remaining innovative, competitive, and economically viable. This is where “Future Resources” by Interzero offers essential guidance: What concrete demands and obligations lie ahead for the sector? Where is there genuine scope for action? And which solutions are already proving effective in practice?

The focus here is not on abstract goals, but on practical insights, strategic context and open discussions about the opportunities, risks and limitations of current approaches.

From Theory to Practice

What sets “Future Resources” apart is its strong emphasis on implementation. Industry best practice demonstrates how Design for Recycling, the use of recyclates, new material concepts and circular business models can be successfully implemented. It is about more than technological innovation: collaboration across the entire value chain is essential.

High-level Contributions from Regulation and Practice

Renowned speakers have already confirmed their participation and will provide expert insights: Legal expert Dr Markus W. Pauly will outline the latest developments and requirements relating to the PPWR and their practical implications. Gunda Rachut, Head of the German Central Packaging Register (ZSVR), will provide up-to-date insights into minimum standards and their significance for recyclable packaging and effective material flows. With a strategic outlook focused on “Packaging in 2030”, Thomas Reiner of Berndt+Partner will highlight new opportunities, risks and the strategic decisions required for the packaging sector. Additional speakers from industry, retail and academia will complement the programme.

Alongside the programme, an exhibition will showcase innovative packaging solutions from companies and start-ups, offering tangible examples and opportunities for direct exchange with a professional audience.

Dialogue on Equal Terms

Future Resources serves as a platform for dialogue. Here, different perspectives come together: regulatory context, industrial practice, academic research and market-driven solutions. This open exchange on equal terms builds trust, fosters learning and strengthens shared responsibility for a functioning circular economy.
Particularly in times of transformation, it becomes clear that future-proof packaging does not emerge in isolation but through cooperation between business, policymakers and society. Only through knowledge transfer, networking and open dialogue can sustainable solutions be scaled and regulatory requirements translated effectively into practice.
Future Resources is therefore more than just a specialist conference – it is a forum where the future is conceived, discussed and actively shaped.
